Decannulation and FEES Webinar is an advanced webinar which provides in-depth information about Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) to aide in the decannulation process. The instructor of the webinar is Nicole DePalma, MS CCC-SLP. Nicole has worked with critically ill patients with tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation for over 12 years. She worked daily with this population at a long term acute care hospital, proving dysphagia management including instrumental swallowing assessments, protocol development and implementing a tracheostomy team. Nicole was also the Director of Clinical Education at Passy-Muir, Inc. and continues to work as a Clinical Consultant for Passy-Muir.
Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is a great tool to use for help with the decannulation process. Speech-language pathologist can play a crucial role in helping to determine if a patient will be safe for decannulation. Some of the determinants of decannulation include secretion management, swallowing status and cough strength, which all fall under the realm of speech-language pathology.
